A river runs red through the Amazon Basin, carrying muddy sediments, evidence of deforestation in the world`s largest and most important rainforest. Logging for livestock pasture, soybean plantations, farming and other human uses impacts biodiversity, climate, livelihoods and other factors. A band of forest has been maintained around the pictured river while other areas nearby have been converted. With the biomass of a tropical rainforest in the trees and plants more than in the soil, logging results in a great loss of nutrients and a fairly irreversible situation. (Fotograf: Steven Zeff)
