Het lava, Hawaii

Smooth ropey pahoehoe lava flows on the Big Island of Hawaii. The Earth is still hot inside from its birth and continues to cool in the form of volcanoes. In Hawaii, a hotspot under the sea floor builds islands and volcanoes. As islands are born, they raft away on the moving Pacific tectonic plate: the hotspot is found under the Big Island of Hawaii, the archipelagos most volcanic island. (Fotograf: Steven Zeff)
