Wooden sailing whale boats were adapted from Yankee whaler rowboats for shore-based whaling of sperm whales in the Azores. Lookouts spotted whales and signalled whalers from onshore towers. Whaling using hand-thrown harpoons continued there into the computer age until Portugal joined the European Union in the 1980s. (Fotograf: Steven Zeff)
