An icefield is an area high in the mountains where snow accumulates and compacts into glacial ice. By definition, ice isn't a glacier until it begins to flow downhill by gravity. Whereas glaciers are known as rivers of ice, icefields can be thought of as lakes of ice from which glaciers pour. (Fotograf: Steven Zeff)
