Killer whales (orcas) are top predators and long-lived magnificent organisms. Adult male killer whales have impressive dorsal fins that can reach 6 feet (1.9 m) high. A whale`s dorsal fin, like its tail, doesn`t have any bones in it and in some cases can be bent or even draped over. The dorsal fin together with the grayish saddle patch which lies behind it, help researchers uniquely identify individual orcas. Different orca groups worldwide have different dietary preferences and social structures and appear to be evolving apart from each other. (Fotograf: Steven Zeff)
