Sand dollars are round flat echinoderms, relatives of sea urchins, that live on soft ocean bottoms feeding on plankton and organic material. Barnacles can be described as shrimp standing on their head in calcified plates kicking food into their mouth. They will settle a variety of substrates, including sand dollars evidently.
