Sand dollars are round flat echinoderms, relatives of sea urchins, that live on soft ocean bottoms feeding on plankton and organic material. Alive they are covered by a dark coat of short spines; dead they can make a bleached white appearance up on the beach. (Fotograf: Steven Zeff)
