The moon rises full over a ridge on Mexico's Isla Santa Catalina, home of the endemic rattleless rattlesnake and giant barrel cactus. The Sea of Cortez' desert islands are a UNESCO biosphere reserve, each representing unique evolutionary laboratories. This full moon on the winter solistice 1999 was larger and brighter than usual, the moon being at perigee, its closest point in its orbit to Earth. (Fotograf: Steven Zeff)
