Killer whales (orcas) are top predators and long-lived magnificent organisms. Different orca groups worldwide have different dietary preferences and social structures and appear to be evolving apart from each other. Resident fish-eating killer whales of the Pacific Northwest live their lives in maternal family groups. Each pod is known by a unique dialect; each orca is known by a unique saddle patch behind its dorsal fin. (Fotograf: Steven Zeff)
